balericsLast week it was announced that Spain is going to abolish heavy duty Matriculation tax on super yachts who wish to engage in charter activity while in its territorial waters. Namely, the Spanish Congress of Deputies approved a bill to repeal the Matriculation Tax applying to all charter yachts in Spanish waters.

This is excellent news for the entire Spanish marine industry, super yacht charter crews and agents and most of all to a huge number of mega yacht charter parties who wish to enjoy luxury crewed holidays in this part of the Mediterranean.   In its simplest, this tax amendment will allow Spain to participate in the mega yacht charter market under the same conditions that already apply to surrounding countries.  We expect to see the immediate effect in increased enquiries and indeed bookings as a result of this measure for next year’s 2014 charter season.

This means that for the super yacht charter season of Summer 2014, even internationally registered or based mega charter yachts will be able to cruise the Spanish coastline and islands without any legal limitations.   As a result, we will be pleased to provide new offers on all yachts which are likely to announce the itineraries for the next year.    We therefore look forward to many of the world’s best yachts to arrive in Puerto Banus, Malaga, Valencia, Barcelona, Ibiza, Mallorca or Menorca shortly.

balericsThis decision is in line with the one announced earlier this year, when Spain’s Ministry of Development issued a statement pertaining to the status of the Spanish Matriculation Tax. As per their statement, the Ministry of Finance and Public Administrations decided to stop the application of Matriculation Tax to all charter boats larger than 15m. Prior to this legislative change, vessels over 15m were subject to the Matriculation Tax regardless of their status or if they were involved in commercial activity.  The registration tax of 12% which adds substantially to the final cost of any charter yacht, is however likely to stay in place.  Nonetheless, there is now a growing hope that through this modification the competitiveness of the Spanish charter sector will be improved and SuperSailYachts.com will be finally able to offer latest super yacht models to all charter guests wishing to cruise the Balearics or Costa Brava and Costa del Sol regions.   We therefore expect that boats such as lovely BLUE PRINCESS STAR or one of the MANGUSTA 130’s will be able to agree mega yacht charters starting or finishing in Ibiza or Mallorca, as most popular locations, shortly. This decision should not have any major effect on passenger ships such as O’MEGA or RM ELEGANT that were able to cruise in the Spanish waters under different terms.
